Essential Oils – Frequently Asked Questions

Where are your essential oils sourced from?

Our essential oils are sourced wholesale from ECO. Modern Essentials, a trusted Australian supplier known for their commitment to purity, quality, and ethical sourcing. Each oil is carefully selected to support wellbeing and mindful living.

Are your essential oils 100% pure?

Yes. Our essential oils are 100% pure, natural, and undiluted, with no synthetic fragrances, fillers, or additives.

Are your essential oils safe to use in diffusers?

Yes. All of our essential oils are suitable for use in ultrasonic and ceramic diffusers. Always follow your diffuser’s instructions and avoid overfilling with oil.

How many drops of essential oil should I use?

We recommend 6–8 drops in a standard diffuser. You may wish to adjust this depending on room size and personal preference.

Can essential oils be applied directly to the skin?

Essential oils are highly concentrated and should always be diluted before skin application. Mix with a carrier oil such as jojoba, sweet almond, or coconut oil. A patch test is recommended before use.

Can essential oils be ingested?

No. We do not recommend ingesting essential oils unless under the supervision of a qualified healthcare professional. Our oils are intended for aromatic use and topical use when properly diluted.

How should I store essential oils?

Store oils in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat. Always keep lids tightly closed to maintain freshness and potency.

Do essential oils expire?

Yes. Shelf life varies by oil type. Citrus oils generally last 1–2 years, while woody and resin oils may last much longer when stored correctly.

Are your essential oils cruelty-free?

Yes. Our essential oils are cruelty-free and not tested on animals.

Can I blend essential oils together?

Absolutely. Blending oils allows you to personalise your experience. Start with small amounts and experiment gently to find combinations that suit your mood and intentions.

Essential oils can be toxic for pets. Never leave bottles open or in reach of animals. Each pet will differ, so please use caution when diffusing oils around pets and start by diffusing in a well-ventilated area. Start with a few drops of oil in a diffuser and gradually increase the amount as needed. Watch out for changes in their behaviour, such as leaving the room while oils are burning, changes in eating habits, coughing, sneezing or excessive scratching. If you notice changes then we recommend to stop using that particular oil. The higher the concentration of essential oil, the greater the risk to your pet. Your pet’s body mass will also be a factor on their sensitivity to essential oils. Smaller pets will be more prone to adverse reactions. If your pet ingests any oils accidentally or you have any concerns, go to the veterinarian immediately.

Cats are generally more sensitive to essential oils than dogs, and even a small amount of exposure can cause skin irritation. This is because cats lack a specific enzyme in their liver that helps to break down toxins. As a result, essential oils can build up in their system and cause problems.

Which ECO. products are safe for pregnancy?

Aromatherapy and the use of essential oils can be a great support for an expecting mother, with benefits including pain relief, calming, sleeping, energy and mental grounding. However there are also some warnings that you should consider before using essential oils in your pregnancy journey.

The Golden Rules of Aromatherapy During Pregnancy

If you have had difficulties falling pregnant or if you have had a history of complicated pregnancies or miscarriages avoid using essential oils during the first trimester unless you are under the supervision of a qualified practitioner. Dilute essential oils to 1% in a massage blend. Low dilutions are recommended because the expectant mother may experience a heightened sense of smell and find a stronger blend too overwhelming. Secondly, there is good evidence to suggest that essential oil molecules can cross the placenta and some essential oils in large concentrations may not be healthy for the baby. Use your increased sense of smell to advantage and inhale each essential oil before use. You will know immediately if the oil is suitable for you as it will smell obviously wonderful or unpleasant. Note: essential oil preferences may change throughout your pregnancy.

Why is there conflicting information about the essential oils I can use during pregnancy?

Even amongst very prominent and respected Aromatherapists there are different opinions about the safety of using certain essential oils during pregnancy. Some essential oils are thought to have the effect of promoting menstruation or regulating hormones and although there is no evidence to suggest that these oils would affect a pregnancy we cannot be sure, so for now avoiding these essential oils is prudent. For safe self-care choose essential oils from the list above. Please always seek medical advice for use of essential oils during pregnancy.
