There’s a lot more to a candle than wax, a wick and a label.
When you open a box from Serendipity Candles by Tracey, you see the finished product.
A beautiful candle. A carefully placed label. A fragrance you chose because something about it sounded like you.
Maybe you light it that evening, curl up on the lounge and enjoy that little moment when the fragrance begins to fill the room.
What you don’t see is everything that happened before that candle reached you.
And believe me, there is a lot. ❤️
It Starts Long Before I Pour the Wax
One of my favourite parts of being a candle maker is fragrance.
I can smell a fragrance and immediately imagine where it belongs. Some scents feel like slow Sunday mornings. Others remind me of fresh air after rain, a beautiful hotel, Christmas with family, or that feeling when you’ve finally finished everything for the day and can sit down.
But choosing a fragrance is only the beginning.
I test. And test again.
The wax matters. The vessel matters. The wick matters. Even the diameter of a jar can completely change how a candle burns.
Sometimes a candle behaves beautifully on the first test.
Other times?
It has very different ideas. 😂
There have been plenty of moments in my studio where I’ve stared at a candle wondering why something that should work has decided it absolutely will not.
That’s part of handmade.
Every Candle Passes Through My Hands
Serendipity isn’t a warehouse filled with machines producing thousands of identical candles.
It’s me.
I prepare the jars. I work with the wax. I measure the fragrance. I place the wicks. I pour the candles and watch how they set.
Then they need time.
Candles can’t be rushed simply because an order has arrived. The wax and fragrance need time to settle together so that when you eventually light your candle, it performs the way I intended it to.
Once it’s ready, there are labels, lids, boxes and all those finishing touches.
By the time one of my candles arrives at your front door, I’ve probably picked it up more times than you could imagine.

And Then There Are the Ones That Don’t Make It to the Website
This is probably the part of a handmade business customers don’t see very often.
Not everything works.
I’ve tested fragrances I was convinced everyone would love, only to decide they weren’t quite right.
I’ve changed wicks.
I’ve changed jars.
I’ve poured candles that simply didn’t pass my own standards.
I’ve redesigned labels because something was almost right — but almost isn’t good enough.
There are ideas sitting in my studio right now that you may never see.
And there are others that might eventually become your next favourite Serendipity product.
That’s the lovely — and sometimes frustrating — part of creating everything myself.
Your Order Is Never Just an Order Number
This is perhaps the biggest difference between buying handmade and buying something produced on a huge scale.
When your order comes through, I see it.
I notice when you’ve come back for the fragrance you bought last time.
I notice when someone is trying something new.
I know when I’m packing a gift that someone has chosen for a person they love.
And yes, I still get excited when orders come through.
Every single order means someone has chosen something I created with my own hands to become part of their home.
I don’t think I’ll ever take that for granted.
Why I Still Love Making Candles
Candles began as something much more personal for me.
They became a way to slow my mind, work with my hands and create something beautiful during a time when I needed that more than I realised.
Over time, that small beginning became Serendipity Candles by Tracey.
But the reason behind it hasn’t really changed.
I still believe our homes should contain little things that make us feel good.
I believe fragrance can change the feeling of a room.
And I believe lighting a candle at the end of an ordinary day can become a tiny ritual that says:
I’m home. The day is done. This moment is mine.
You don’t need a special occasion.
Sometimes an ordinary Tuesday night is reason enough.
So, the Next Time You Light One…
When you light your Serendipity candle, I hope you enjoy the fragrance and the beautiful glow.
But I also hope you know there was a real person behind it.
There was testing, pouring, experimenting, probably a little swearing when something didn’t go according to plan 😂, and a whole lot of care before that candle ever made its way into your home.
That’s what handmade means to me.
It’s never just wax, fragrance and a wick.
It’s something I made for you.
Because you’re worth every beautiful moment.
XO
Tracey ❤️
